DIRECTOR OF GOVERNMENT RELATIONS

FTA is seeking an experienced government relations professional to join its dynamic team.
 
The Director of Government Relations is primarily responsible for shaping responses to developments in federal legislation, rulings and administrative actions that may impact state tax administration and will directly engage with federal policymakers and officials.  The Director will work with fellow FTA staff to monitor and analyze developments and trends on the state level in tax law and administration. The Director will play a key role in communicating with members. This position reports directly to the Executive Director. 
 
Our Hall of the States office is walking distance to the Hill. Post-pandemic this position will require significant work in DC and some travel.
 

Responsibilities

Policy Issues
  • Identify, monitor, and respond to relevant federal legislation, rulings and administrative actions that may impact state tax administration
  • Monitor developments and trends in state tax administration
Federal Liaison
  • Engage with federal policymakers and officials, both directly and through empowering our members, to communicate impact of federal policies on state tax agencies
  • Enhance and leverage relationships between state members and key federal actors by facilitating communication opportunities and providing informational materials and talking points
  • Represent FTA members on committees and working groups with national partners and stakeholders on matters of interest to both federal and state tax administrators
Member Communication
  • Prepare regular newsletters to members regarding federal and state tax developments
  • Engage in regular high-level discussions on emerging issues with the FTA Board and the other leaders of state tax agencies
  • Handle questions on a daily basis from staff and membership on emerging tax issues
Programs and Training
  • Collaborate to develop content for various FTA conferences and training. 
  • Present at various conferences and trainings.

Qualifications

  • 5 years or more of relevant government relations experience, federal experience preferred
  • Prior experience in tax policy and/or administration helpful
  • Experience in public communications through various channels
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with command of cutting-edge meeting, publication, spreadsheet and presentation tools
