Individual Income Tax Filing Resources

FTA’s mission is to serve tax agencies, but we want to be as helpful as possible to taxpayers and tax preparers.

Most types of income earned in the U.S. is taxed by the federal government. The Internal Revenue Service administers the federal individual tax. Information about preparing your federal income tax return is available here.

Forty-one states and the District of Columbia also have a broad-based individual income tax. Two states have a limited individual income tax that applies only to certain investment income (not wages). These income taxes are separately imposed by state governments and are administered by the state tax agencies.

Protect Your Information from Criminals

The state tax agencies, IRS and tax preparation companies have been working together for more than a year to coordinate their programs to minimize tax refund fraud, which is a crime that is often tied to identity theft.  You can read more about the Security Summit activities here (and we even have a news conference video).  The three groups shared their best fraud prevention tips in YouTube videos that are hosted on the IRS channel.  Watch the videos to learn how to protect your personal information from criminals.
